Summer Expo 2013

9 June - 19 August 2013
Gemeentemuseum Den Haag

It is in close cooperation with Stichting ArtWorlds that Gemeentemuseum Den Haag organizes Summer Expo 2013. This exhibition is the follow-up to the successful Summer Expo 2012 & 2011, the very first Dutch national art exhibitions ever.

Summer Expo 2012 came about by means of open registration, had a surprisingly large number of participants and turned out to be a highly successful and popular exhibition which, moreover, got a lot of media attention.

Both renowned and unknown artists are invited to register as participants for Summer Expo 2012 - LOVE and are allowed to present a maximum of three of their works. The costs attached are 25 euros for each individual work of art. Qualifying rounds are held in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Enschede.

Theme: LOVE
This year, the central theme chosen by the jury is LOVE: romance, seduction, unattainable love but also jealousy and its disastrous consequences have always been a popular theme in art. Already in the 17th century, Johannes Vermeer symbolically portrayed his messages of love in the form of aces of hearts which he included in several of his paintings. For her work entitled Everyone I ever slept with, Tracey Emins sewed the names of all of her sex partners on the canvas of a tent. A larger difference in the approach of the concept of LOVE is hardly imaginable. What is your idea or vision of LOVE? And in what way do you choose to let that show in your work?

Anonymous Selection
The exhibition presents a survey of contemporary Dutch art, in the broadest possible sense of the term, without making a distinction between the established and non-established art worlds in the Netherlands. Each distinct work of art has to speak for itself - and it is only its expressiveness and quality that count, since neither the names nor the backgrounds of the artists responsible for the works are mentioned during the selection.

Qualifying Rounds
Qualifying Rounds are held in three different cities in the Netherlands. The 12-person jury consists of curators, gallery owners, cultural entrepreneurs, art historians and artists.

You are invited to register on
Saturday 17 March at Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Enschede
Saturday 31 March at De Overkant, Amsterdam
Saturday 14 April at Cultuurhuis Stefanus, Utrecht

Public Program
At the time of the qualifying rounds and during the exhibition lectures, courses and workshops on the themes of LOVE, artistism and the contents of the actual exhibition itself are presented. These activities, which are all open to the public, have been selected by Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and ArtWorlds and have been organized in cooperation with Centraal Museum Utrecht and Rijksmuseum Twenthe.

ArtWorlds Encouragement Prizes
